Wednesday July 28th marked a very important day for the industry of online gambling within the United States of America. A panel of politicians discussed the possibility of pushing forward a bill that regulates and taxes online gambling in the USA. Proposed by Massachusetts House Representative Barney Frank, the bill would revoke the current gambling ban set by the UIGEA that came into being in 2006. Frank’s bill, HR 2267, was approved yesterday after some amendments were made by fellow Democrats and by collaborating Republicans. If this bill becomes law it will oversee all of internet’s gambling in the US, regulating poker and casino sites but leaving out sport books.
Many feared that passing a law that enables US to play at online would make this activity widespread and would reach every home in America. However, the truth of the matter is that millions of Americans already play at online casino and poker sites and the numbers will increase as the UIGEA turned out to be inefficient to stop this activity. Legalizing gambling would simply allow the US government to be able to oversee this industry and set rules that would guarantee safety to the US gambler. Currently all companies that offer gambling center to US players are set overseas and the money is going out of the US without being taxed.
The bill just approved is still very far away from becoming a federal law, but this marks an important move forward. For years the issue has been debated and no true advancement had been made. Finally, after nearly 4 years since online gambling was deemed unlawful in the US, does a group of political pioneers set out the path that will give the liberty to Americans to spend their hard-earned money as they please.
