It’s no secret that China is yet another nation against online gambling, including online casinos. Just recently, the Ministry of Public Security has put its finger on the matter and in previous days briefed journalists of the fact that over 2,500 websites were successfully shut down by the police. Even though not all of these sites are online casinos or gambling related, they all belong to the same family describe as “criminal activity.” The Chinese government claims their anti-gambling laws are essential to protecting the younger generations of the country from “unwholesome content and internet addiction”.

In addition to shutting down those websites the government also went ahead and prepared 4,000 criminal cases against offenders and stated that they arrested nearly 7,050 suspects for online gambling activity including sports betting and participating in online casino games such as free slots and poker.

In the past, China allowed for online casino players to register their real names and verify their age . Players also had to put a time limit on their play. However, the new laws in the country state that any game that is morally questionable will be banned, including popular casino games and card games. In 2009 it was estimated that the Chinese market value of the online gambling industry was almost $3.8 billion. However, the laws were unable to complete a bill that required for these companies to pay the proper tax and pay back the country. The newer laws, drafted by the Ministry of Culture earlier this year, have clearly state that in order for a online gaming company to receive a license they must have a minimum registered capital of 10 million yuan, approximately $1.48 million. In more recent events, China managed to ban the use of virtual currencies which has caused a dramatic slowdown in the amount of money and time underage online gambling occurs in the country.
